Valve tag sizes and shapes
We make plastic valve tags in four shapes and 17 sizes: round 1″ to 3″, square 1″ to 3″, octagon 1½″ to 3″ and rectangular 2″ × 1″ to 4″ × 2″. For most jobs a 2″ round, square or octagon tag is the one to pick: with a service line and a short number it engraves ½″ numbers and ¼″ letters, the heights MasterSpec Sections 22 05 53 and 23 05 53 ask for.

Round valve tags
The everyday valve tag: six diameters with a top hole for chain or an S-hook.
If your spec asks for ½″ numbers and ¼″ system letters, use 2″. A 1½″ round tops out at 7/16″ numbers — and 1¼″, 1½″ and 2″ all cost the same.

Square valve tags
The corners give the top and bottom lines room a circle doesn’t have.
Choose square when the bottom line is long, or to set a building’s tags apart from round ones.

Octagon valve tags
A different outline that reads at a glance: emergency shut-offs, fire service, mains.
Keep most valves round and put octagons on the ones on your shut-down list — the domestic water main, the gas shut-off, fire service, boiler and chiller isolation.

Rectangular valve tags
For words and long numbers: MAIN SHUTOFF, BOILER 2 ISOLATION, HWS-001. Holes at one end or both.
A system-prefixed number like HWS-001 is seven characters; a 2″ round engraves it at ¼″, a 3″ × 1½″ rectangle at 15/32″.

Hardware

| Brass S-hook | Hanging a tag from a handwheel spoke or lever; quick to move. |
| Brass bead chain, 4½″ | Looping round a valve stem or neck. The most common choice. |
| Brass jack chain + S-hook | Larger valves and handwheels that need a longer loop. |
| Nylon cable tie | Quick installs, and tags fixed flat against a valve body. |
| No hole (adhesive back) | Sticking a tag to a panel, box or valve body instead of hanging it. |
